Shifting cultivation is also known as slash and burn agriculture. It is a type of farming activity which involves cleaning of land plot by cutting down of trees and burning them. Then the ash is mixed with soil and crops are grown. After the land has lost its fertility it is abandoned. The farmer then moves to a new plot. It is practiced in thickly forested area of Amazon basin, tropical Africa, parts of South East Asia and North East India. Crops grown include maize, potatoes, cassava and yam etc.
The major disadvantage of Shifting Cultivation are as follows -
(1). It causes deforestation.
(2). Pollution is also caused.
(3). It destroys the natural vegetation.
(4). It also disturb the wildlife.
