The British banned shifting cultivationbecause they regarded this practice as harmful for the forests. They felt that the land which was used for cultivation every years could not grow trees for railway timber. When a forest was burnt, therewas the added danger of the flames spreading and burning valuable timber.
Shifting cultivation is an agricultural system in which plots of land are cultivated temporarily, then abandoned and allowed to revert to their natural vegetation while the cultivator moves on to another plot.
