Shifting cultivation is a agricultural system in which plots of land are cultivated temporarily, and then abandoned and allowed to revert to their natural vegetation while cultivator moves to another plot.
British banned this cultivation because they regard this practice as harmful for the forests.Shifting cultivation also made it harder for the government to calculate taxes.

In this type of farming the cultivation land is changed after every cultivation process. It is also known as slash and burn cultivation as the land is prepared by cutting and burning the forest. The Britishers banned it because the people performing it , don't stay at the same place which was a big challenge against the census.
