Shiftinh cultivation also know and the slash and burn cultivation is a practice of cultivation where the farmers (mostly nomadic tribes) clears an area off tress and small vegetations. Then they brun them and the ashes gets mixed with the soil and makes the soil fertail. They cultivate on that strip of land for some years and when the soil starts loosing its fertility, they move to a new strip of land leaving time for trees to regrow.

The Europeans banned it because:

a) as it dmaged the hard timber trees like teak and sal which were very important raw materials for railways and ships.

b) as the cultivators kept moving and the strip land's size and quality differed very time, it was hard for calculating and imposing taxes on them.

c) It also killed many saplings of useful trees. (can be written together with point a.)
