shifting cultivation was done by the people living in forests of baster .a piece of land is cleared usually slopes of the hills and then the forests are burnt, the seeds are thrown in the ashes to grow crops, after some years when the land losts it's fertility then it is left fallow for many years.this process is known as shifting cultivation.

The European foresters discourage the practice of shifting cultivation because they thought the land to wildress which has to come under cultivation and to meet the growing demands of the population they wanted the people to grow commercial crops like wheat rice etc.

hope it helps u ☺️
