Overload is a condition when current is higher than system/ equipment nominal rated current. The flow of current is occurring through intended path. An equipment can bear temporary overload situation depending upon its design . Overload if not cleared within time may result short circuit condition.
Short circuit is a condition when current flows through unintended path. Current magnitude is very high . Such conditions are very severe for electrical systems. It should be detected and cleared as soon as possible to minimize damage.

Hey Friend,
Short circuiting - When there is a low resistance, excess power flows through the circuit. This sometimes causes the breaking of insulation of wires, and the wires come in contact, resulting in electric fires and damage to appliances.
Overloading - When many appliances are connected and switched on at the same time, it causes a strain on the circuit, resulting in overloading which may shut the circuit automatically and also result in electric fires.
Hope it helps!
