Shravanabelagola (Śravaṇa Beḷagoḷa) is a town located near Channarayapatna of Hassan districtin the Indian state of Karnataka and is 144 km from Bangalore. The Gommateshwara Bahubali statue at Shravanabelagola is one of the most important tirthas (pilgrimage destinations) in Jainism, one that reached a peak in architectural and sculptural activity under the patronage of Western Ganga dynasty of Talakad. Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died here in 298 BCE after he became a Jain monk and assumed an ascetic life style.[1]

• The temple of Shravanabelagola was built on the hills of Chandragiri by Ashoka in devotion to Chandragupta Maurya who was reputed to stay there with his mentor. It is a holy place for Jains and a world-famous sightseeing place.
• The statue is the world’s largest monolithic idol. However, the statue of Gomatheeswara was built by Chandrayana of the Gangas on Vindyagiri hills which were architected by the later ruling dynasties hence it is considered as a living historical evidence of the millennia.
• Every 12 years the idol is adorned with liters of milk by the monks and Jains that come from all over the world to satisfy their spiritual faith. The area has got insane verdant greenery, calm crystal water thereby attracting many to meditate.
