trigger warning// mention of death, implied murder
Shylock was basically the antagonist of the play and he had many reasons to kill off the protagonist: Antonio.
- first of all, disrespect shown to Jews by Antonio. Shylock and Antonio were not born rivals. Antonio used to hate and disrespect Shylock and the other Jews because they were not Christians. Shylock was fed up of being bullied because of his religion and belief.
- His daughter. one of the most savage people in the play was Jessica. being the daughter of Shylock, a Jew, she eloped with a Christian that too a friend of Antonio himself.
- His Oath. He had taken an oath that if Antonio forfeits the bond, he will cut a pound of flesh from his body
Everyone knew that if Shylock is allowed to extract a pound of flesh, Antonio will not survive and so he rejects the offered money and insists on the forfeit of the bond
