Sickle cell disease is a group of disorders that affects hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells throughout the body. People with this disorder have atypical hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S, which can distort red blood cells into a sickle, or crescent, shape.

Sickle cell anemia is the change in shape of RBC from Disc-shaped to sickle-shape so that Hemoglobin can't be carried and also O2 can't be transported... It is due to the substitution of Glutamic acid by Valine in the 6th position of the amino-acid sequence.... It is an autosomal disease, that is, it can affect males and females...
