This method is used to separate the components that are of different sizes. For sieving, a sieve is used.A 'sieve' is a wire mesh fixed tightly in a frame.

In this method, the mixture to be separated is put in a sieve. The particles, having a small size, pass through the holes of the sieve whereas the larger sized particles remain on the sieves, with different sizes of holes, are used for different mixtures.

At home, sieving of wheat flour may be done to separate finely ground flour particles from the coarse particles.

At construction sites, sieving of sand is done to separate fine sand from gravel and pebbles. The Sievi, used there, is much bigger in size and the size of its holes is also big.
