Sigma is a measurement of variability, which is defined by the Investor Words website as "the range of possible outcomes of a given situation."


To calculate the standard deviation of those numbers:

Work out the Mean (the simple average of the numbers)

Then for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result.

Then work out the mean of those squared differences.

Take the square root of that and we are done!

Sigma means sum of all things in a given table.

Eg if x = 3,5,7,8,1

Then Sigma x = 3+5+7+8+1
