Explanation:

Sign convention is a system based on the cartesian planes which we have studied in previos classes, specifically in chapters like Coordinate geomtery.

Sign convention is used to determine the exact location of an object or the image of an object with respect to the mirror or lens. Be it concave or convex.

If you want to ace your numericals you must master the sign conventions. Here's a brain map for you.

  • U (object distance from lens/mirror) is alway -ve
  • V (image distance is always postive)
  • f in concave is negative and in convex positive (Lens & mirror both)
  • In magnification if the image is + then it's virual and erect and if it's -ve it's real and inverted.

For better understanding of the chapter I will recommend you watching some going through your textbook.
