What is sign convention in optics

Sign convention depend upon on which sides the variables lie.... If the variables like F, c lie on the left side of the pole then those values are considered to be - ve and if they lie on the right side they are considered as + ve. and if they lie above principal focus they are considered to be + ve and below principal focus are considered -ve ( eg. height of the object) ... And the formula 1/F = 1/u + 1/v
