what is significane of tha term n/p ratio?

In the field of nuclear physics N/P ratio is the ratio of neutrons and protons present the nucleus of a nucleid. Ideally the ratio should be 1 but heavier atoms with high atomic number shows a significant deviation from the ideal ratio and the ratio becomes greater than 1 .
