Significant figures of a number in positional notation are digits in the number that are reliable and absolutely necessary to indicate the quantity of something.
If there is a zero between two non-zero digits then it is also a significant figure. For example; 4.5006 have five significant figures. Zeroes at the end or on the right side of the number are also significant. For example; 0.500 has three significant figures.
Zeroes to the left of a first non-zero digit are not significant. For example, 007 has 1 significant figure and 0.0000102 has 3. The trailing zeroes or the zeroes to the right of the last non-zero digit are significant if the number has a decimal point otherwise they are insignificant.
