If an object moves around a mean line in such a way that the acceleration of the object is proportional to the displacement of the object from the mean position and the direction of acceleration is the mean, termed to be SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION.

Explanation:

Characteristics of simple periodic motion:

(a) When a particle with simple periodic motion passes through its mean position, then

(i) No force is acting on it.

(ii) Its acceleration is zero.

(iii) The velocity is maximum.

(iv) The kinetic energy (K.E.) is maximum.

(v) Potential energy (P.E.) is zero.

(b) When a particle performing simple periodic motion passes through the extreme or end points of its motion, then-

(i) Its acceleration is maximum.

(ii) The restoring force acting on it is maximum.

(iii) The kinetic energy is zero.

(iv) potential energy is maximum.

(v) The velocity is zero.
