A seismometer is an instrument that responds to ground motions, such as caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions. During an earthquake, the base moves and the mass does not. The motion of the base with respect to the mass is commonly transformed into an electrical voltage.

Modern seismometers include three (3) elements to determine the simultaneous movement in three (3) directions: up-down, north-south, and east-west. Each direction of movement gives information about the earthquake.
