They play an important role in the physicochemical processes of metallurgical production: they remove undesirable impurities in metals and protect metals from the harmful effects of the gaseous medium in the furnace (that is, from oxidation and gas saturation). A melt usually covering the surface of molten metal in metallurgical processes, as the smelting of raw material.Slags are alloys of oxides of various compositions.

Slag is the glass-like by-product left over after a desired metal has been separated (i.e., smelted) from its raw ore. Slag is usually a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide. However, slags can contain metal sulfides and elemental metals.
