Smelling salt is ammonium carbonate
Smelling salt is ammonium carbonate. When mixed with water it releases ammonia.
Ammonium carbonate is normally solid. When inhaled due to moisture in nasal passage it releases ammonia. Ammonia irritates nasal mucosa. Inhalation of ammonia results inhalation reflex. This makes unconscious person to wake in consciousness.
