SMM:

SMM is System Management Mode in Central Processor Unit. This is mainly used to manage the power management system and hardware control. It is used for firmware, not for software applications.

It provides isolated processor for the operating system which helps in running the system faster. The processor executes SSM through special address which are not used by the other operating modes.

Some of the uses of SMM is handling and managing the system; supporting security function; emulating motherboard; centralizing configuration of system; and so on.
