what is so special about carbon that it should form so many compounds? Suitable answer plzzz

The especial fact about carbon is that it never forms ionic compound..but only forms covalent compound..this is because there are four electrons in it's outermost shell so the transfer of electrons don't take place..instead only sharing of electrons take place
