A social custom is any form of expression or identification that masquerades as personal, but is anything but personal. Amazingly, many people copy a pattern, behavior or act thinking (to themselves) that it is "me being me" while it is really a social custom that has been adopted.

For example, person "X" cannot talk without inserting the word "like" into (almost) every utterance. "X" is following a social custom of expression within a subculture - the adoption of the contraindicated, yet somehow "cool". A social custom is often seen as part of the adopter's personality.

Another example: Person "Y" always washes his hands AFTER he pees, instead of thinking/being aware of the idea that he should possibly wash his hands BEFORE he pees. Why ...? Social customs rarely allow examination or questioning of intent, purpose or validity. These followers of prevailing social customs just "do it".
