Steps taken by the Government to combat these evils:
Indian law does not permit the practice of untouchability. Article 17 of the Constitution of India bans the practice. The government of India has passed the Untouchability Act, 1955, to eliminate any form of caste based discrimination
-The Dowry Prohibition (DP) Act : Asking or giving of dowry can be punished by an imprisonment of up to six months, or a fine of up to Rs. 15000 or the amount of dowry whichever is higher and imprisonment up to 5 years

A 75-year-old allegedly committed 'sati' after the death of her 80-year-old husband Jageshwar Tewari at a village in Banda district of UP on May 7 2005
2) Female Infanticide
Dr Sudam Munde and wife Saraswati's clinic in Maharashtra has been sealed as they were practicing female feticide
3) Child Marriage:
UNICEF defines child marriage as marriage before 18 years of age and considers this practise as a violation of human rights.
According to the 2001 census there are 1.5 million girls, in India, under the age of 15 already married
