A social structure is in essence any grouping of individuals which forms for any purpose or is put together for any purpose. This could range from a family unit to a public or private organisation; from a criminal gang to a police service; from a university fraternity to the state itself. These social structures operate as temporary or permanent communities, invariably have their own particular cultural expressions/discourses and in that way reinforce the individual’s sense of association, belonging and identity.
