Sodium chloride is made up of Sodium Cation( Na+) and Chlorine anion(Cl-). The compound is formed due to an ionic bond in which sodium 'donates' an electron to chlorine and becomes positively charged while chlorine becomes negatively charged. Due to electrostatic attractions, they bond together to form sodium chloride.
