It forms +Na and -OH ions in H2O as a solution with some heat generated. This reaction is not a Chemical change as it can easily be reversed. Take care though not to pour water into the alkali crystals, rather pour the alkali into the water in small amounts as you stir gently. This precaution is to avoid a very spontaneous reaction. Also avoid direct contact with skin and eyes and avoid fume inhalation.
