Soil is the thin layer of material covering the earth's surface and is formed from the weathering of rocks.

It is made up mainly of mineral particles, organic materials, air, water and living organisms.

Layres of the soil are :--

Top most humus layer

  • This layer contain dead and decaying matter in the soil. This made the soil fertile. More thicker this layer more the soil fertile. Forests has a thick humus layer. Usually this is thinnest layer of soil. It is A horizon.

Subsoil weathered rocks, sand and silt clay

  • This layer has a very little amount of humus content . This has fine sand particle. Usually this layer is thicker than humus layer. It is B horizon of soil

Substratum weathered parent rock material

  • This layer has no humus content. This contain rough sand particles and pieces of parent rock. It is C horizon of soil.

Unweathered parent bed rock

  • This layer has no humus content and fine soil. It mainly contain Unweathered parents rocks. It is D horizon of soil.
