Soil

  • Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth's surface.
  • It is formed when rocks on earth's surface are broken down by the action of wind, water and climate. This process is called weathering.
  • The characteristic feature of a soil depend upon the rocks from which it has been formed and the kind of plants that grow in it.
  • Soil forms different layers of particles of different sizes. Each layer is different from the other in texture, colour and chemical composition. Even the thickness of each layer is not same.
  • A vertical section that shows different layers of soil is called a soil profile. Each layer is called a horizon.

Short note on soil.

  • Soil is important to us. It is one of the most important natural resources on earth. Most of the life forms on the earth depend on soil as it is a direct, or indirect, source of food for them. Plants obtain their nutrients from the soil and animals are dependent on them. Soil is the home to many different forms of life. Soil is known as the earth. It is the substance from which our planet takes its name. Soil has been formed by weathering, erosion and decay of living plants and animals matter. However, valuable top soil is found so slowly that it should be protected and valued because it cannot get replaced in the average lifespan of human being.
