• ⟶ Plants grow in soil. They absorb nutrients from soil and prepare their food in the presence of sunlight. The food prepared by plants is used by almost every living organism directly or indirectly.

• ⟶ Soil also keeps the plants in their place by holding their roots firmly.

• ⟶ Soil formation is very slow process. Soil is formed when big rocks break down into small particles by the action of sun's heat, wind, rain, flowing water and climatic conditions. The process of soil formation by the breaking down of rocks is called as $\sf\pink{weathering}$.

• Weathering is of two types ⟶

• $\sf\orange{physical \ weathering}$

• $\sf\orange{chemical \ weathering}$

Physical weathering:-

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ it is a natural process in which the rocks are broken down into smaller pieces without any change in the characteristics of the original rock. Temperature difference, growing roots of plants, frost, etc. cause such a change.

Chemical weathering:-

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ in this type of weathering, the minerals present in rocks are broken down into new mineral components . This results in a change in the chemical nature of the rocks.

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ when weathering of rocks starts, the huge parent rocks break up near the surface, which can be a physical or chemical process. Then the smaller rocks undergo weathering. Animal and plant remains in the soil break down to $\sf\orange{humus}$ by microorganisms.

Sandy soil:-

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ It is formed by the disintegration and weathering or rocks such as limestone, granite, quartz and shale.

Clayey soil:-

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ It is formed by the disintegration and weathering of rocks for a long time. It is also formed as sedimentary deposits due to weathering, erosion and transportation of rocks.

Loamy soil:-

• $\sf\purple{↬}$ this soil is considered to be the best soil. As it contains equal amounts if sand, clay and silt and is rich in humus and is dark brown in colour.
