Naturally occurring loose covering of broken rock particles and humus on the earth's surface which is capable of supporting life is known as soil.

Soil is a dynamic medium in which complex physical,chemical and biological activities continuously take place.

Soil is soft and porous.

Properties of soil:-

Soil has some special properties which determines soil types. Four important properties of soil are mentioned below:-

1. infiltration and perforation rate of water in the soil.
2. Moisture in the soil.
3. Porosity of the soil (absorption of water by the soil).
4. Permeability of the soil (water retention ).

Types of Soil:-

• SANDY SOIL

Sandy soil contains a large amount (60-65%) of sand particles and very small amount of silt and clay particles. It does not support the growth of a plant as it's water retention capacity is very low.

• CLAYEY SOIL

This soil mostlycontains clay particles and a small quantity of humus and silt. Clay particles begin very small get closely packed.So,clayey soil is compact and can hold water.It is used to make toys and pots.

• LOAMY SOIL

Loamy soil is a mixture of sand,clay,silt and humus in the right proportions.Loamy soil has good water-holding capacity. Loamy soil is best suited for growing plant.
