Soil Erosion-

\red\impliesIt is a process in which the top fertile layer of soil is lost. Due to soil erosion, the soil becomes less fertile. The top layer of soil is very light which is easily carried away by wind and water. The removal of topsoil by the natural forces is known as soil erosion.

Example of Soil Erosion-

  • Sheet erosion by water
  • Wind erosion
  • Gully erosion – when water runoff removes soil along drainage lines

Soil erosion is harmful because-

  • Reduced ability of the soil to store water and nutrients.
  • Exposure of subsoil, which often has poor physical and chemical properties.
  • Higher rates of runoff, shedding water and nutrients otherwise used for crop growth.
  • Loss of newly planted crops.
  • Deposits of silt in low-lying areas.
