The removal of top sheet of soil is known as soil erosion. In Chambal basin it forms gully erosion when running water cuts through the clayey soil and is known as ravines.

It can be prevented by the following measures: -

1) Afforestation

2) Overgrazing should be controlled.

3) Mining and quarrying activities should be reduced to an extent.

4) Pollution by factories and industries should be minimized.

5) Overirrigation activities should be controlled.

6) Thorny bushes should be grown.

7) Strip cropping should be done.
