Soil is formed by weathering, wearing away and breaking down of rocks into fine particles. Soils are formed from rocks. When rainwater gets collected in pores (small holes) they crack the rocks in a number of pieces.

Soils are formed through the interaction of five major factors: time, climate, parent material, topography and relief, and organisms. The relative influence of each factor varies from place to place, but the combination of all five factors normally determines the kind of soil developing in any given place.

When leaves, plants, grasses, small bugs, and animals fall into cracks of rocks, these organisms start breaking down and soil starts to form. It's here where tiny microbes, such as bacteria and fungi, are busy working in the soil.
