'Soil' means the uppermost layer of the earth's crust, which contains the organic as well as mineral matter necessary for the growth of plants. The conditions of climate, topography, vegetation and underlying rock can alter the characteristics of Soil.

The soil is formed by weathering or disintegration of parent rocks by physical, chemical and biological agents. ... Living organisms such as lichens, insects, microorganisms make soil ready for the plants to grow. The growth of roots of plants further adds to the weathering of rocks and thus forms soil.
