Introduction

The mixture of rock particles and humus is called soil.

Soil is one of the most important natural resources. It supports the growth of plants by holding the roots firmly and supplying water and nutrients. It is the home for many organisms. Soil is essential for agriculture. Agriculture provides food. Soil is thus an inseparable part of our life.

Soil is formed by breaking down of rocks and by the action of wind, water and climate. This process is called weathering.

Soil Types

  • Sandy soil: This type of soil contains a greater proportion of big proportion. Sand particles are quite large they cannot fit closely together, so there are large spaces between them. These spaces are filled with air or we can say that sand s well aerated. Water can drain quickly through the spaces between the sand particles. So, sandy soil tends to be light, well aerated and rather dry.

  • Clayey soil: In this type of soil, the proportion of fine particles is relatively higher. the particles are packed tightly together leaving little space for air. It is heavy because it holds more water.

  • Loamy soil: In this type of soil the amount of large and fine particles is relatively the same. it is the best type of soil for growing plants. Loamy soil is a mixture of sand, clay and silt. the loamy also has humus in it. It has the right water holding capacity for the growth of plants.
