solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in a direct line between the Earth and the sun. The moon's shadow travels over the Earth's surface and blocks out the sun's light as seen from Earth.

a  solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the earth and the sun. at that time the moon , earth and the sun is in the same line. sometimes the moon blocks only a part of the sun . this is called as partial solar eclipse. sometimes the moon blocks the whole sun . this is called as solar eclipse or total solar eclipse.
