Answer:

A coil in the form of cylinder in which its length is greater than its diameter and the coil is wrapped with insulated copper wires of many circular turns is known as solenoid.

When a current starts flowing through the solenoid,it produces magnetic field and the pattern of producing magnetic field is similar to that of bar magnet . The ends of solenoid is behaving just like the north and the south poles of bar magnet. Hence ,a current carrying solenoid behaves as a bar magnet.

The current carrying solenoid is used for making electromagnet also known as temporary magnet as well as permanent magnet
