A coil of many turns of insulated copper wire wrapped closely in the shape of a cylinder is called a solenoid. the magnetic field is uniform inside the solenoid.

We can determine the north and south poles of a current carrying solenoid by using a bar magnet. We bring the bar magnet near both the ends of a freely suspended current carrying solenoid. The end of the solenoid which will be repelled by the North Pole of bar magnet will be it's North Pole and the end of the solenoid which will be attracted by the North Pole will be the South Pole of the solenoid.

This is because a solenoid itself behaves like a bar magnet.
