Explanation:

Sonar uses sound waves to 'see' in the water.

NOAA scientists primarily use sonar to develop nautical charts, locate underwater hazards to navigation, search for and map objects on the seafloor such as shipwrecks, and map the seafloor itself. There are two types of sonar—active and passive.

What is SONAR?

  • The instrument used to measure the depth of the ocean is known as SONAR.
  • The process of using SONAR is also known as Oceanography. This is used to measure something that can't be measured manually inside the ocean
  • SONAR full form is Sound Navigation Ranging
  • In a ship there will be a transmitter which transmits ultrasonic sound.
  • When the sound is received, it's received using receiver.
  • eg: Speed of sound reaching the ocean floor and coming back = 1500m/s

              Time taken = 4 seconds

              Distance =  \frac{1500 *4}{2} = 3000 m
