Long note on SONAR

SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging .

Look in the attachment to understand the concept of it.

Notes on SONAR

  • In SONAR , ultrasonic vibrations are sent in all directions from a ship.
  • These waves travel through the sea .
  • They are reflected by obstacles such as iceberg, sunken ships, submarines, etc.
  • Upon reflection these waves come back to the ship within a certain time
  • This time can be used for calculating the distance of the obstacle because we already know the speed of sound waves in water.
  • Let speed be V and time is t. then d=Vt / 2
  • This process of finding the obstacles by emiting sound is called SONAR
  • In SONAR only ultrasonic vibrations are sent because of their large wavelength, less scattering ability and so on.
  • When SONAR is used to calculate the depth of water it is called echo depth ranging .

Hope it helps you:-)
