SONAR stands for SOund NAvigation and Ranging system.
It is based on the principal of ultrasonic waves.
It is used to determine the depth of a sea in the following way:
- The ship is fitted with the system of SONAR. It consists of a transmitter and a receiver.
- The transmitter transmits the ultrasonic waves below the sea.
- After reflection of the sound wave from the sea bed, when the wave reaches back and is received by the receiver, the time is noted.
- Using the formula 2d = vt, the distance of the ship from the sea bed is calculated.
In the above formula, d is for distance, v is for velocity and t is for time.
