SONAR stands for SOund NAvigation and Ranging system.

It is based on the principal of ultrasonic waves.

It is used to determine the depth of a sea in the following way:

  1. The ship is fitted with the system of SONAR. It consists of a transmitter and a receiver.
  2. The transmitter transmits the ultrasonic waves below the sea.
  3. After reflection of the sound wave from the sea bed, when the wave reaches back and is received by the receiver, the time is noted.
  4. Using the formula 2d = vt, the distance of the ship from the sea bed is calculated.

In the above formula, d is for distance, v is for velocity and t is for time.
