SONAR means sound navigation and ranging. sonar consists of a transmitter and a detector. the transmitter transmits waves which travel through the water . when these waves hit an obstacle they reflect back. these reflected rays are detected by the detector which are converted into ultrasonics and then interpreted. sonar helps in finding the depth of the sea. we can this by the formula 2d=vxt.

hope it helps....

SONAR stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging. Sonar is an instrument which uses ultrasonic waves to measure the distance, direction as well as speed of underwater things. Sonar consists of a transmitter and a detector which is installed in a boat or ship. The transmitter forms and transmit ultrasonic waves. These waves travel through water and after hitting the object on the seabed, become reflected and sensed through the detector.
