Explanation:

Sonar its full form is Sound Navigation and Ranging.Sonar is a device which is used in ships to locate hidden underground objects such as submarine,rocks,incebergs etc.It is also used to measure the depth of the ocean at a particular point.

Ultrasonic waves are sent from a source fitted near the surface of water on the ship,into water.These waves strike the obstacle or the sea bed reflected back.The time taken by ultrasonic waves from source to target from target to detector is noted.This time is actually the time taken by wave to travel double the distance which is to be measured.

Thus,time taken by wave to travel from source to target=t

Speed of sound is water=v

Thus,distance between source and sea bed or obstacle,

2d=S multiply T
