Explanation:

SONAR means Sound Navigation And Ranging.

It is mainly used in submarines for detection of any object like other submarine, torpedo or anything around them.

Now question arises that why RADAR can't be used in submarines, answer is that RADAR doesn't work inside water.

And speed of ultrasound (which are used in SONAR) decreases in air so SONAR is not used in air (eg- Aeroplane, Airport, Missile detection)

Sonar makes use of sound travels through water. There are two basic types:

Active sonar - where a sound is generated (or pinged) by a projector, and the sound waves generated travel through the sea to the target, and are returned as sonar echoes, to a hydrophone, which converts the sound into electricity.

Passive sonar - uses the sound radiated by the target. This is a one-way transmission and a hydrophone picks up the sound and converts this into electricity.
