Sonar, (from “sound navigation ranging”), technique for detecting and determining the distance and direction of underwater objects by acoustic means. Sound waves emitted by or reflected from the object are detected by sonar apparatus and analyzed for the information they contain.

Working of SONAR:

The transmitter in SONAR produces and transmits powerful ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic waves travel through the water and after striking the target the beam is reflected from the seabed and is received by an under-water detector (mounted on the ship).

SONAR stands for sound Navigation and Ranging. It uses ultrasonic waves. These waves travel though water and after striking the object on the sea bed gets reflected back and are sensed by detector. The waves are then converted to electrical signals by detector. The time taken by wave to reach detector is recorded. Now, distance of the object from the ship is calculated by wring formula .
