The source of a sound vibrates, bumping into nearby air molecules which in turn bump into their neighbors, and so forth. This results in a wave of vibrations travelling through the air to the eardrum, which in turn also vibrates.

Sound is a pressure wave which is created by a vibrating object. This vibrations set particles in the sur- rounding medium (typical air) in vibrational motion, thus transporting energy through the medium.
