they have outermost electrons in the s orbitals. they have very large size, very large electronegativity, low ionization energy.

They are metals,highly reactive,have low ionisation energies,soft metals possessing low melting and boiling pionts,readily form ionic compounds(except lithium and beryllium),show a fixed valency,strong reducing agents,except Be &Mg impart characteristic colour to flame,have great affinity for oxygen and non metals,oxides are basic,except Be and Mg they decompose water and readily evolve hydrogen
