A spectrochemical series is a series in which ligands are arranged in increasing or decreasing order of their strength.

Lidgands have different field strength and as a result the crystal field splitting, ∆° or ∆t depends upon the field produced by the ligand and charge on metal ions.
Some lidgands are strong and able to produce strong field, whereas others are weak and produce weak field.
The series of ligands are arranged in an increasing order of field strength is called spectrochemical series, example:
I^- < Br^- < SCN^- < CI^- < S^2- < OH^- C2O4^2- < H2O < NCS^- < EDTA^4- < NH3 < en < CN^- < CO
Weak field ligands cannot cause pairing of electrons and form high spin complex , whereas,
strong field ligands can cause pairing of electrons and form low spin complex.
