Speed = Distance/time

BUT

Velocity = Displacement/time

Speed being a scalar quantity, is the rate at which an object covers distance. The avg speed is the distance per time ratio.
Velocity is a vector quantity that refers to the rate at which an object changs it's position.
The avg Velocity is Displacement per time ratio.
