The specific change that happened to the narrator of this story is the she come to realize that their mother was the very reason why Anita would want her to knit a shawl for her. Anita knew that their mother would love to do something while staying at home. If their mother will not do anything she might feel that she is useless and too old to live. So in order for her that she can still have something to be proud of and accomplish something for herself, Anita decided to request a knitted shawl from her.
